Ranger body was dumped into the lake after she was murdered early that morning in the Grissom community according to Granville County Sheriff Marion Grissom New superintendents have been appointed for the Warren and Granville County prisons effective July 1 Ted Smiley superinten dent of Granville Correc tional Center moves to War ren Correctional Center and the assistant superintendent The County will receive a Granville County Department state grant of approximately $6000 for the study The county must then provide ap proximately $2000 of its own money The commissioners were asked to 'appoint a committee to oversee this grant Reid pointed out that jail construction is expensive and crime is not decreasing costs a lot of money to keep people in the county she said program tries to balance corrective policies with the resources that are of Social Services at the last meeting be lifted Cozart said he had been involved in two meetings with the Department of Social Ser vices in which several actions that needed to be taken were outlined The commissioners unanimously approved motion The commissioners also approved a motion requesting that Granville Medical Cen ter be designated as the lead agency for the Community Alternative Program for Dis abled Adults in Granville County (CAPDA) CAPDA which is funded by Medicaid is designed to provide services to eligible disabled adults in of the Granville County cor rectional system was put into motion by the Granville County commissioners at the July 5 meeting A contract between Granville County and the Kerr Tar Regional Council of Governments approving preparation of a community based corrections plan was submitted to the commission ers The Kerr Tar Regional Council of Governments has been hired to study the effectiveness of the criminal justice system The study is a result of the new structured sen tencing laws sentencing is supposed to shift a great many offenses from incarceration especially for first time of fenders and non violent of fenders into intermediate according to Julie Reid economic development specialist for the council of governments Counseling and commu nity service are two examples of intermediate sanctions Groups To Oppose Granville Landfill Seven environmental groups and governmental agencies have announced that they will hold a joint news conference to announce their opposition to a proposed location for a Granville County landfill The groups oppose the location near the Tar River because of environmental and economic problems the clean up lia bility for taxpayers and the potential for adversely affecting drinking water The groups which have announced their intention to participate are Save The Water Granville Residents Op posed to Waste (GROW) Granville Environmental Action Team (GrEAT) the Environmental Action Team (EAC) Citizens for Open Government (COG) the North Carolina Waste Awareness Network (NCWARN) and Mayor Lucy Allen representing the City of Louisburg The Butner 1y I fc 1 CreedmoorlM oouy Located Man Charged by Bill Wynn A Granville County woman was stabbed and stran gled to death during an appar ent domestic dispute in the Grissom community on the morning of June 30 and then her body was dumped off a bridge into alls Lake accord ing to Granville County Sheriff Marion Grissom The body of Ina Mae Green 43 was recovered in the lake at approximately 3:45 pm on June 30 some distance from the Beaver Dam bridge on Old Weaver Trail where the body was apparently dumped Earlier that morning Granville County detectives and State Bureau of Investiga tion agents arrested and charged Michael Gay Gourley 33 of 3140 Willow Creek Drive Wake orest with one count of first degree murder The ar rest came after authorities armed with a search warrant searched trailer Willow Creek Drive is lo cated just off of Lawrence Road approximately two miles past the North Carolina State Nell store in the Games in Durham The Garner Road team defeated the Carolina Express of Hickory by a score of 52 to 50 in the championship game at Shepard Middle School The Garner Road team will participate in the AAU Nationals in Utah on July 23 31 The record now stands at 19 2 The children in grades pre through fifth SummerSAALT stands for Summer Special Activi ties and Leisure Time Assistant Superintendent of Community SchoolsPublic Relations Leia Eaton said that the program began June 6 and will continue through August 12 Parents can enroll their children in advance or on a drop in basis at the pro gram sites The cost is $60 a week for the first child $50 a week for the second child free for the third child and half price for the fourth child West Oxford Elementary Wilton Elementary Creed moor Elementary and But ner Stem Elementary are the schools that are hosting the program according to Eaton Activities that have been planned for SummerSAALT include: arts and crafts computer camp science camp math activities reading time CCC Lab field trips and swimming bowling and skating once a week Each sitis directed by an individual who is experi enced in the classroom and most are certified teachers In addition' teacher assis tants and high school and col lege students help out accord ing to Eaton There is also a low staff to student ratio Most of the time there is no more than 10 to 15 children to a staff member Two coordinators Mary Moseley and Kathy Keith manage SummerSAALT They are certified teachers who serve as a liason between the school central of fice and the SummerSAALT sites They are in charge of the administrative responsi bilities According to Eaton the work of these coordinators en sures that staff membershave time to help children and not be concerned about adminis trative duties Eaton said that Summer SAALT is operated through the Community Schools Pro gram and that Summer SAALT was totally self sup porting from the fees parents pay The United Way also gives a grant to Granville County child care programs Eaton said no money from the school sysfem is used to sup port SummerSAALT Eaton also said that no one comes to these programs for free however some scholar ships are offered According to Eaton she and her assistant Diane Dickerson developed the Community Schools Program in 1985 Eaton said that when her son was a kindergartener she came up with the idea to create programs such as SummerSAALT that would benefit children when they in school Eaton said that Summer SAALT the only child care program the Community Schools Program operates In addition this summer the program is operating Coaches Club for children in grades 6 8 Throughout the school year the Community Schools Pro gram operates programs such as Club and Before and After School Eaton said that 300 chil dren were enrolled in Summ ers AALT and Coach's Club.
